Dana Point Headlands Project Approved -Landmark decision // State coastal panel ends 30 years of debate, voting 7-5 to allow a hotel and homes to be built at the site.
By SUSAN GILL VARDON, Orange County Register
Laguna Beach, CA; January 16, 2004: A divided California Coastal Commission on Thursday night ended 30 years of often contentious debate and approved building on one of the last undeveloped promontories in Southern California.
On a 7-5 vote, the commission gave the go-ahead to a 90-room hotel, 122 homes that real-estate experts say may sell for $2 million or more and commercial development on the sweeping Dana Point Headlands.
Plans to build a lighthouse and cultural center on the point that soars 180 feet above the ocean were scrapped because they would have been on an environmentally sensitive area. Instead, developer Sanford Edward will donate $2 million to Dana Point for parks. “I’m elated,” said Edward, surrounded by well-wishers in the Grand Ballroom of the Montage Resort in
Laguna Beach. “It was been a long process, but I’m disappointed we didn’t get the community amenities.”
Opponents of the project welcomed the concessions but were not happy with the final outcome.
